Brothers in Valor

brothers in valorRudi, Helmuth, and Karl are best friends from church.  But soon it looks like they may have other Sunday activities—they are forced to join Hitler’s youth group.  Quickly the boys learn of the ruthlessness and violence of the Nazis.  They see their Jewish classmates disappear forever, see families terrorized, and witness the brutal horrors of Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass.

The boys realize they must fight for a Germany free from Hitler, even though it will put their lives at risk.  Will they carry on through the terror?  Or will the Nazis destroy them before they can spread the truth?

Based on a true story of teen resistance, this is an unforgettable tale about three young people who had the courage to stand by their convictions.

What the Critics Said:

“Tunnell’s gripping heart-rending story pays tribute to [the] valiant struggle for social justice.”  (Language Arts)

“This is a well-written, quiet novel . . .”  (AJL Newsletter)

“Tunnell does a superior job in showing how religious organizations within Germany responded to Nazism’s attractions and demands, and in depicting the humane underbelly of such inhumanly murderous figures as the Gestapo . . .”  (School Library Journal)

“Tunnell does an excellent job of dramatizing the ordinariness of the boys, their teasing friendship and mounting terror, the sense of what it was like to be young at that time.”  (Booklist, Hazel Rochman—Boxed Review)
